FACA Monthly Program -After the Celebration comes the Remembrance: Finland and Finnish America’s “Red” and “White” Wars

May 18 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

K. Marianne Wargelin,  Honorary Consul for Finland in the Twin Cities since 1999, President of FinnFest USA since 2004, and extensive researcher into small cultures within Western Culture particularly Finnish America and Finland, is our speaker for the May 18th FACA program at 7pm at the International Institute of Minnesota.

Marianne’s Ph.D. dissertation, now in its final stages at the University of Tampere, includes an exploration of how Finland’s history, including its Declaration of Independence and the Civil War which quickly followed, involved both Finns living in the USA and activities occurring in Finnish America.  Her FACA presentation will consider how the  history of the Minneapolis Finntown and the history of Finns in Minnesota illustrates that Finland’s Civil War was fought also in the USA. In an epilogue, she will comment on how, 100 years later, Finland commemorated the Declaration in 2017 and is remembering the Civil War in 2018.  Please join us!  Coffee and conversation will follow.
