Finland 100 Independence Celebration – Virginia, MN

Finnish American and Friends, the Hibbing, MN chapter of the Finlandia Foundation National and the Virginia, MN Ladies and Knights of Kaleva are collaborating to host a major Finland 100 event celebrating 100 years of Finland’s Independence. The event will be held June 24, 2017 at Historic Kaleva Hall in Virginia, MN. Built in 1906 by Finnish immigrants, Kaleva Hall still sporting it’s authentic décor, artifacts and displays, an auditorium with stage and dance floor will be open between 4pm and 5:30 pm for self guided tours, a book signing, a Tori (market place), music, sandwiches, salad, and of course, Kahvi (coffee) and Pulla (Finnish Cardamom Bread).
One of America’s top Finnish American bands, The Finn Hall Band, will be the featured attraction at the Finland 100 celebration. The Finn Hall Band, named one of Finlandia Foundation National Performers of the Year, will present a concert of Finnish Music at 6pm followed by popular dance music performed by Ralph Tuttila (mandolin), Al Reko (accordion and vocal) Dennis Halme
( accordion), Johanna Lorbach (violin) Cheryl Paschke ( violin and nyckelharpa) and Janna Tutila (bass).
The Finn Hall Band is an award winning group of musicians dedicated to preserving the feel and sounds of historic Finnish American dance halls. The Finn Hall Band was selected to perform at a Finnish Canadian Grandfest, at FinnFests in the USA, and at Kaustinen Music Festival in Finland, one of the largest international music festivals in Europe. Come, listen and dance!
Two well known personalities, Solie Anderson and Eleanor Ostman will be featured at the Finland 100 celebration between 4pm and 5:30pm. Anderson and Ostman have joined forces to publish a new book, Celebrations to Remember.
Finnish-born Solie Anderson has become one of the most sought after caterers in the Twin Cities. Solie founded Deco Catering, The Taste of Scandinavia, and the Finnish Bistro. Anderson served President Obama and the Dali Lama on their visit to the Twin Cities. Solie was featured hosting a Scandinvian Mid-Summer dinner in Martha Stewart Living magazine.
Eleanor Ostman, Finnish-American from Hibbing, MN, is well known in Twin Cities food circles. For three decades Ostman wrote a food column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and published a number of food related books. They will provide a presentation at 5pm.
