FACA is partnering with the Minneapolis-Kuopio Sister City organization for this showing. “The Exile’s Song” was shown for the first time this summer for Finnish descendants in Ottawa\, Canada. Nov 17th will be the debut public showing in the US. \nThe primary story in the film is about Aaro Jalkanen\, who had to leave Finland in 1914 due to his active strivings for independence.  He lived in exile in Fitchburg Massachusetts when he wrote the song Kallavesj\, without knowing if he could ever return home to Finland.  Marja Lampi interviewed Jalkanen´s grandchildren\, who told about the colorful life of their grandfather\, who was a lawyer\, a writer\, a linguist\, and a diplomat in New York and Duluth. \nIn this 51 minute film\, the story-tellers share deep love of the beautiful Lake Kallavesi and surrounding areas of Kuopio Finland.  The four other stories open up to us the world Jalkenen missed while he was far away from home.  They include a fishing episode\, one of the most disastrous inland water accidents in Finland\, the painting of the dramatic illustration by the lake for Kalevala\, Forging of the Sampo\, by famous Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela\, and a New York born American missing her childhood with her grandparents in Kuopio by the Kallavesi Lake. \nThe movie provides a window into understanding the Finland of the past 100 years\, and a wonderful opportunity to see Kuopio\, Kalavesi\, and Koli Finland. \nThere are English subtitles.  The public is also invited to attend at no cost. \nCoffee time/kahvi aika and discussion to follow. \n  \n URL: LOCATION:1694 Como Ave\, St. Paul\, MN\, United States CATEGORIES:Coffee Table,Education,Entertainment,Film,Finland 100 Centenary Signature Event,History ORGANIZER;CN="FACA%20-%20Finnish%20American%20Cultural%20Activities" END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20171118T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20171118T130000 DTSTAMP:20171118T121709 CREATED:20171028T171954Z LAST-MODIFIED:20171028T171954Z SUMMARY:Ladies of Kaleva 49th Annual "Finnish-American Holiday" Bazaar DESCRIPTION:The Ladies of Kaleva will be holding their 49th Annual “Finnish-American Holiday” Bazaar on Saturday\, November 18\, 2017 from 9a.m. to 1p.m. at the Historic Kaleva Hall (1906-2017) – 125 3rd Street North – Virginia\,MN.
