Himmeli: From Finland to Minnesota
April 9 - May 1

Himmeli, ceiling mobiles, were originally created in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia. The root of the word, himmel, means ‘heaven’ in the Scandinavian languages and these mobiles were hung from the ceiling in homes as good luck charms to ensure the fertility of fields and healthy abundant crops. The exhibition and programming at the Nordic Center will shed light on this ancient craft tradition that is now experiencing a revival, not just in Finland but also in Northern Minnesota, where it is flourishing in the Finnish-American community. Mary Erickson and Alison Aune will share their knowledge and skills for this art tradition at the Nordic Center through an exhibition and Zoom workshops and lectures.
Opening weekend events include:
- April 9: Limited in person Viewing at the Nordic Center 6-8pm
- April 10: Zoom workshop with Mary Erickson 1-3pm. Registration Required.
- April 11: SunFunday Himmeli for Children with Alison Aune 1-3pm
More information and event registration on the Nordic Center’s website, or email Alison Aune: aaune@d.umn.edu.
