Daniel Keeler, Solo Cellist

Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120 (revised version composed 1851)
Cellist Daniel Keeler and the Minnehaha Repertory Orchestra will perform the dramatic and powerful Schelomo, Hebraic Rhapsody for cello and orchestra, by Ernest Bloch.

Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was raised and came of age in Switzerland. He subsequently moved to the United States and had an outstanding career as a composer and educator. Bloch composed three major works in what became his ‘Jewish Cycle’ (1915-16), as the composer sought to define his Jewish musical identity. ‘Schelomo’, the Hebrew form of Solomon, is the third and last, and arguably most famous and often played selection of the three. The solo cello in dialog with the orchestra tells of the trials and final fall of King Solomon. Bloch’s music is enormously descriptive. powerful and above all passionate. The solo cello part is an expressive tour de force matched by dramatic orchestral writing.

Concert is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
